How to Get Blake Lively’s Makeup

Subtle, yet fabulous makeup in golden colors

One of the rising stars of the new generation, as she’s often been called in the media, Blake Lively of “Gossip Girl” fame always causes quite a stir whenever she walks the red carpet. The last time to do so was the other night, when she arrived at the Ed Sullivan Theater for an appearance on The David Letterman Show. Dazzling in a pink mini-dress and with an impeccable ‘do, Blake also managed to draw attention to her subtle, yet fabulous makeup.

In order to recreate Blake’s look on Letterman, the first thing you must bear in mind is that this particular actress is only 21 years old, as FabSugar also points out. This means that she has youth on her side, which, in turn, means no wrinkles or unsightly spots.
However, a youthful countenance just like Blake’s can also be achieved with exfoliation and moisturizer. Once these two are out of the way, we should start by applying foundation, as the first step towards getting Blake’s look.

Make sure the foundation blends well, and then apply some concealer under the eyes, around the nose and to any spot there might be. Not only will the latter hide the dark circles under the eyes, but it will also make the skin more luminous, thus bringing them out better – which is exactly what you’re going for here, especially since the next step is all about playing with golden colors.

“For a subtle, yet polished eye, begin by sweeping a caramel-color shadow all over the lid as a base. Next, add a deeper bronzey-gold shadow […] to the crease and blend well. Then, use a champagne shadow […] to the inner v and blend just under the lower lashes. Line the tops of the eyes with a black liquid liner (careful not to make the line too thick) and line the inner rims on the bottom with a flesh coloured pencil (to brighten). Finish with two coats of black mascara and a few false lashes in the corner if you dare!” FabSugar says.

With the makeup for the eyes now done, concentrate on your cheeks. A touch of blusher is a must for a more natural look, so apply some to the apple of the cheeks and along the cheekbones. Choose a color that is delicate, yet warm enough to create the impression of natural. Also, you might want to consider the shade of lipstick as well when you’re looking for the perfect blusher for you, experts share.

Since we’re on the topic of lipstick, to get Blake’s look, you need a “deep rosey-pink” shade. Apply the lipstick with a brush for optimal results, then, once done, add a touch of lip gloss for moisture, but make sure you don’t overdo it with the gloss.

On a final note, remember that this type of makeup works best on fair-headed women, just like Blake.

In lieu of a Gossip Girl Beauty Quiz this week, I've brought you an uptown makeup look. Lots of you have been writing in asking about Blake Lively's (aka Serena van der Woodsen's) makeup and how she always manages to look so polished yet edgy.

So here's the breakdown of her fair Winter makeup from the Chanel Nuit de Diamants Party last night. For all the dirty details on how to get this chic face, cheeks, eye, and lip look at home, read more

    • FACE Blake's skin is absolutely flawless for this look. Start by applying a little bit of cream foundation (such as La Mer Treatment Crème Foundation SPF 15 in Ivory) with a foundation brush and blend well. Next, apply a little bit of concealer on top of any remaining redness. Then use an eye brightening pen on the outer corners of eyes and undereyes, and blend well. As a finishing touch, dust some Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder all over the face.
    • CHEEKS Her cheeks have a hint of subtle color to add some warmth to her skin. I suggest trying a product like DuWop Blushbooster in Watermelon. Apply it to the apples of the cheeks and lightly blend it along the natural line of the cheekbones. It also has a little bit of shimmer, which really helps add dimension to matte skin.
    • EYES The most important part of this entire look is creating a strong brow to help frame the face. As you can see, Blake's brows are filled in and defined without looking too heavy. This is because she has chosen a pale brown/warm blonde shade. I love Physician's Formula 3-in-1 Brow Tweez in Light Brown because it's got a great blending brush on the end of it.

For the lids, blend an ivory shadow such as Smashbox Single Eye Shadow in Filter all over the lid. Next, take another light brown shadow such as La Bella Donna Compressed Mineral Eye Shadow in Cafè Au Lait and blend it ever so slightly in the crease. Line your upper and lower lashes with a creamy brown eyeliner pencil, and on your lower lashes, apply some of the liner on the inner rim of your eye. Top with two coats of black mascara. As a finishing touch, take a liner brush and dip it into a silver or white iridescent shadow such as Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Polyester Bride and dot in along the "inner v" of your eyes for a little touch of twinkle!

    • LIPS Blake almost always wears a bright pink or coral high-shine lip gloss shade to showcase her pearly whites, but here it looks like she's wearing a creamy and glossy lipstick. Try a coral color like Flip Sheer Glow from Senna Cosmetics and keep reapplying throughout the evening to keep your makeup looking fresh.
